How All-Natural PRP Can Reverse Thinning Hair
Thinning hair is a surprisingly common problem for both women and men, becoming more common as we get older. If you have thin or thinning hair, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections could be the nonsurgical solution you’re looking for.

Hair loss is a common problem for both women and men. In fact, more than 80% of men and about 50% of women experience substantial hair loss at some point during their lives. While knowing you’re not alone might provide some comfort, it doesn’t really do anything for your confidence or your thinning hair.

At Micari Aesthetics, our team helps patients in Belmore, New York, restore their hair and their confidence with state-of-the-art platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. Let’s look at how PRP works and how it could help reverse your thinning hair.

The science behind platelet-rich plasma

As the name implies, PRP contains both platelets and plasma, two components of blood. Plasma is the liquid part of your blood, while platelets are tiny cell fragments that help your body heal. Platelets also contain special proteins called growth factors. These proteins “activate” when needed to promote healing.

Each platelet is shaped like a shallow dish or plate. When an injury occurs, platelets grow long tentacles that help them bind together to stop bleeding. Growth factors also help repair and replace damaged cells, including cells involved in hair growth.

Platelets also help your body produce tiny, new blood vessels. These vessels improve circulation to injured areas to promote faster recovery.

PRP is especially effective in treating many types of injuries, including sports injuries, and in speeding healing after surgery. More recently, PRP has been used to help rejuvenate aging skin and treat hair loss, including hair loss that happens as we age.

PRP treatment: The basics

Thinning hair happens when hair follicles become inactive and stop growing hair. PRP helps “reboot” inactive follicles, supporting new growth.

At the same time, PRP works on follicles that are already active by boosting circulation in the area. Improved circulation means each follicle receives more nutrients to enhance follicle activity for stronger, thicker hair growth.

PRP treatment is performed right in our office, using a sample of your own blood. Treatment begins when we draw that sample and process it to extract the PRP. Then, the solution is injected into the area of hair loss. We numb your scalp first, so treatment is completely painless.

Microneedling combination

Our team often combines PRP treatment with a second treatment — microneedling. This technique uses a special microneedling device studded with rows of tiny, thin needles.

As we move the device over the treatment area, the needles create areas of “controlled injury” that help stimulate growth factors and other healing responses. The tiny channels created during microneedling also allow PRP to penetrate deeply into the tissue supporting the hair follicles.

Unlike hair restoration surgery, PRP injections and PRP with microneedling don’t require any incisions or sutures. There’s no downtime afterward, and there’s no risk of allergies or rejection. Plus, your treatment can be customized and repeated for optimal results.
