Sagging skin seems to go hand-in-hand with aging. PDO thread lifts help elevate your skin, restoring more youthful contours without surgery, anesthesia, or downtime. Here’s how the treatment works.
No matter how well you care for your skin, eventually, you’re going to notice sagging, particularly in your lower face and jowls. For a long time, correcting sagging and restoring youthful contours meant having invasive surgery, with incisions, anesthesia, and a lot of downtime (plus significant cost).
But now, there’s another option called a PDO thread lift, a minimally invasive procedure that uses injectable sutures to gently lift sagging skin without surgery. Micari Aesthetics is a top provider of PDO thread lifts in and around Bellmore, New York. In this post, our team offers an overview of PDO thread lifts, including how they work and what to expect during treatment.
PDO thread lift — the basics
PDO stands for polydioxanone, a material used to make synthetic absorbable sutures. These sutures are used during operations to close incisions and wounds, dissolving over time and avoiding the need for suture removal.
In a PDO thread lift, PDO sutures are injected under your skin using a special instrument. Then the sutures are gently pulled, elevating your skin and correcting sagging, laxity, and wrinkles. At the same time, the sutures promote the development of collagen that helps support skin naturally.
PDO thread lifts gained popularity for their ability to recreate some of the effects of a facelift without requiring surgery, anesthesia, or prolonged periods of downtime. Today, PDO lifts can be performed on your face, your neck, and even your buttocks.
Some PDO sutures are studded with tiny hooks or barbs that help the sutures hold your skin in place. Once the sutures are placed underneath your skin, they offer results that last as long as two years. At that time, we can repeat the procedure.
PDO thread lift treatment — what to expect
PDO thread lifts are performed in our office as an outpatient treatment. Before placing the threads, we numb your skin at the injection sites, so there’s no need for anesthesia or sedation to keep you comfortable.
The PDO thread injector is designed to insert the sutures at the optimal depth for precise placement and gentle lifting. The sutures are deep enough so they’re not visible once placed.
After your treatment, it’s a good idea to rest for the remainder of the day and avoid strenuous activities for a week or so to allow the injection sites time to heal. It’s not uncommon initially to experience some mild and temporary redness, tenderness, or tightness in the areas where the sutures were injected. These effects typically resolve within a week or so.
Ideally, try to sleep in a position that doesn’t put pressure on the sutures — on your back for a facial treatment or your side or belly for a buttock lift. Avoid rubbing the area for a week or so to prevent dislodging the sutures.
A thread lift isn’t intended to provide you with the same level of results as a surgical lift, but many women and men find that the outcome provides a gentle, natural-looking lift that helps them look great and feel more confident.
